Carlson, passed away peacefully this morning at home in suburban St. Paul/Minneapolis, Minn. He was 85. He is survived by his son, Bishop Carlson; daughters, Cathy and Patty; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jeanne, who died in November 2004. Bishop Carlson has traveled to Minnesota to be with his family. Carlson released the following statement today regarding the appointment of Detroit Auxiliary Bishop Earl A. Boyea as the fifth Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Lansing: "I'm very excited for our neighbors in the Diocese of Lansing. They have been incredibly blessed by the leadership of Bishop (Carl F.) Mengeling for the past 12 years and will certainly find a great blessing in the guidance of Bishop Boyea. Carlson will celebrate a special Mass to mark the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw at 5:30 p.m. on March 2 at St. Mary Cathedral in Saginaw. An open house will follow at the newly renovated cathedral offices. Those who entered the Church during the past year through the sacraments of initiation – from baptized newborns to adults who took part in RCIA programs – and their families are especially encouraged to attend, as are those who serve the poor throughout the diocese. Carlson's Pastoral Letter on Penance, "Jesus Christ, the Divine Physician," which was promulgated on January 25, 2008, the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. "One of the major purposes of the letter is the attempt to move us away from a guilt-centered notion of sin and the sacrament: sin means that we feel guilty, that God is angry, and the Sacrament of Penance is about softening our guilt and God’s anger," Bishop Carlson wrote in an introductory message in the letter. "I want to move us toward a different notion of sin: sin means that something is deeply wounded in us, that we have weakened or ruptured our relationship with God, and the Sacrament of Penance is where God’s desire to heal our relationship meets our desire to be healed."
