Most Rev. Robert J. CarlsonChristmas Message 2007"In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled." (Luke 2:10) God used this occasion to bring Mary and Joseph and the Christ Child to Bethlehem to fulfill what was said in the scriptures. Now, we see clearly that the decree of the Roman Emperor was part of God's plan. Mary knew that Jesus' birth was about to take place and she set out on the journey and came to Bethlehem. However, in Bethlehem they could not fmd a place to stay. As St. Luke says, "There was no place for them in the Inn." Joseph knocked on many doors but there was no place for Jesus. How cold the world was toward God. The greatest event of human history would take place in a stable out side of town and Jesus would be wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. It is important to hear the Christmas story once again, and ask the hard question: If Jesus came to you, to me, tonight - The one they call Wonder-Counselor, God Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace - would we know him and let him in? It is an important question, as tonight Jesus desires to dwell in each one of us - in our hearts and lives and in the reception of Holy Communion and in our celebration of the feast. As the Apostle Paul says, "The grace ofod has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope ... Our savior Jesus Christ." (Titus 2:11) As the Christmas story unfolds, God sought out simple people as the companions for Jesus and Mary and Joseph. The Shepherds received the gift of light and the Angels led them to the child - do we have the humility to come to Jesus - can we slow down enough to hear the angels singing? Tonight Joseph and Mary invite us to come to the Christ child to sing and leave our gifts and embrace our Savior. Tonight, we are invited to bring the gift of our faith to Jesus. Like the shepherds we are invited into adoration and in receiving Jesus living lives that are more simple and humble. Tonight or tomorrow for sure re-read the Christmas story - sit in front of the crib and contemplate what it means that Jesus came and dwells among us - the Word became flesh. Ask Mary to intercede for you and your family that this year you will truly meet the Lord. | ||||||
