SAGINAW— The Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, celebrated Mass at Holy Family Church in Saginaw and led a procession to Veterans Memorial Plaza as part of the Fortnight for Freedom on Wednesday, June 29. The procession included a bagpiper and the Knights of Columbus Color Guard. A wreath was placed at the memorial and Bishop Cistone led the community in prayer. The ceremony, which honored military men and women and their families for their selfless service to the United States, concluded with "God Bless America" and "Taps."
The Fortnight for Freedom, which takes place from June 21 to July 4 is a time when the liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power. These martyrs include St. Thomas More, St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul and the first martyrs of the Church of Rome.
