On June 7, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), faithful from parishes throughout the Diocese of Saginaw will publicly celebrate their belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist through Eucharistic processions.

“Corpus Christi gives us a unique opportunity to take Jesus into the streets and publicly proclaim our faith in His Real Presence in the Eucharist,” said Father Christian Tabares, pastor of St. Agnes Parish in Freeland and St. John Vianney Parish of Saginaw.

“As we walk together behind the Blessed Sacrament, we witness to the truth that Christ remains with His people and journeys with us each day. This Eucharistic procession reminds us that, inspired by the Holy Spirit, we follow Jesus who sends us forth as people on mission with one heart and mind.”

A cherished tradition of the Church, Eucharistic processions involve carrying the Blessed Sacrament through streets and neighborhoods while the faithful accompany the Lord in prayer and song. The procession serves as a visible witness of faith and recalls the Christian life as a pilgrimage toward heaven.

Real Presence

In addition to processions, many parishes throughout the Diocese offer opportunities for Eucharistic adoration, during which the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for prayer and worship.

“Eucharistic adoration flows from our Catholic belief that the Real Presence of Jesus in the Host remains beyond the celebration of Mass itself,” said Father Jose Maria Cabrera, pastor of All Saints Parish in Bay City.

“When we spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, we encounter Christ who continues to give Himself to us. Everyone is welcome to come and pray during exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at parishes throughout the Diocese.”

Catholics across the Diocese are encouraged to participate in local Corpus Christi celebrations and spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament as the Church honors this profound mystery of faith.
