Closure of St. Hyacinth Church in Bay City Now in Effect

BAY CITY, MI — The Diocese of Saginaw today announced that the closure of St. Hyacinth Church, part of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish in Bay City, officially takes effect as of Monday, July 28, 2025.

The decision, originally issued in a decree dated May 2, 2025, had been temporarily suspended to allow for a review of concerns raised by members of the community. After careful and prayerful consideration, Bishop Robert D. Gruss has upheld the decree.

You can access the decree at saginaw.org/decrees.

The faithful of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish are encouraged to continue participating in the liturgical life of the parish at St. Stanislaus Church, or at any of the other four Catholic parishes in Bay City. A complete list of parishes and Mass times can be found at www.saginaw.org.

As outlined in the Code of Canon Law, individuals who feel aggrieved by this decision have the right to submit a hierarchical recourse to the Dicastery for the Clergy at the Holy See within fifteen (15) useful days of receiving this notification.

“This decision is undoubtedly difficult,” said Bishop Gruss in a letter read at parish Masses this past weekend, “but it has been made after prayerful discernment and with a view toward the spiritual and pastoral well-being of the entire community.”
