Dicastery for the Clergy Upholds Diocese of Saginaw’s Decision to Reduce St. Hyacinth Church to Profane Use

The Diocese has received the decision of the Dicastery for the Clergy at the Vatican concerning the hierarchical recourse presented against the decree issued by the Most Reverend Robert D. Gruss, Bishop of Saginaw on May 2, 2025. The Dicastery has confirmed Bishop Gruss' decree in full. Accordingly, the original decree remains in force and will be implemented according to its terms. “Procedurally, the Dicastery finds that the Ordinary acted in accord with the Law."

Therefore, “In accord with CIC can. 1739, this Dicastery hereby CONFIRMS the decrees of the Bishop of Saginaw, which reduced the Church of Saint Hyacinth in Bay City to profane but not sordid use, since the petition of the Recurrent has no merit either in procedendo or in decernendo. Recourse against this Decree may be made before Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature within the peremptory time limit of sixty useful days, in accordance with Article 34 §1 of the Apostolic Letter issued Motu Proprio, Antiqua Ordinatione 34 §1.
