Those attending the First Friday Talk on Oct. 2 were invited to deepen their understanding of the Holy Spirit through a presentation by Bishop Robert Gruss titled Understanding the Seven Gifts of the Spirit.
Drawing on the Church's rich spiritual tradition, Bishop Gruss reflected on the first three of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding and counsel. He explained that these gifts are divine endowments given to believers to help them discern God's will, grow in holiness, and respond more fully to God's call in their daily lives.
Bishop Gruss compared the gifts of the Spirit to skills that become stronger through practice. While these gifts are received through God's grace, he emphasized the importance of nurturing them through prayer, sacramental life, and intentional discipleship. By cooperating with the Holy Spirit, Christians become more effective witnesses of Christ in their families, parishes, workplaces, and communities.
The talk encouraged participants to renew their relationship with the Holy Spirit and to allow these gifts to guide their decisions and actions. Through a life of faith and prayer, believers can become a living presence of Jesus for others, offering wisdom, encouragement, and guidance to those they encounter.
The First Friday Talk series continues to provide opportunities for spiritual growth and formation, helping participants deepen their faith and live more fully as disciples of Jesus Christ.
