SAGINAW - On Friday, February 17, the Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, accepted an award from Saginaw Future Inc., a local economic development organization, on behalf of the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption, 615 Hoyt Ave., in Saginaw. The award was presented to the Cathedral for the major renovation and restoration project. As pastor of the Cathedral, Bishop Cistone accepted the award in recognition of the commitment of the Catholic community to Saginaw.

“The Diocese of Saginaw is deeply committed to the stability and rejuvenation of the East Side community,” said Bishop Cistone when he announced the Cathedral renovation in August 2016. "It is my hope that the work being accomplished at the Cathedral will enable us to be a stronger and more faithful agent not only in the work of the Church but in the well-being and betterment of the broader community."

The work currently underway at the cathedral includes air conditioning, new flooring, a complete renovation of the basement, mechanical and electrical upgrades, interior and exterior lighting upgrades, interior plastering and artistic painting, refurbishing of the stained glass windows, improved restrooms and parking lot improvements. Additionally, the sanctuary is being reconstructed to reflect the original church architecture and a new marble altar and ambo will be installed. Pews also will be added and the original canvas Stations of the Cross restored.

As renovation and restoration work continues at the cathedral, the Diocese of Saginaw is planning for a dedication ceremony on Tuesday, May 9, 2017.
