Religious Sisters Celebrate Jubilees

Four women celebrated significant anniversaries as religious sisters during a special Jubilee Mass at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption in Saginaw on Wednesday, May 15.

Sister Joan Foley, OP, marked 60 years of religious life and Sister Laurene Burns, OSC, Sister Mary Rita Rae Schneider, RSM, and Sister Corinne Weiss, SJ, celebrated 70 years. One religious man, Father Gerald Pehler, OFM Cap., celebrated his 50-year jubilee as well, though he was not able to attend the Mass.

Bishop Walter Hurley, apostolic administrator for the Diocese of Saginaw, celebrated the Jubilee Mass. In his homily, he noted that of the United States citizens who had been canonized, a majority of them were religious women. He thanked all the religious present for their service to the Church in various ministries, including education, health care and assisting the poor.

"The commitment these religious women made some 60, 70 years ago still stands as a powerful witness," he said.
