Seminarian Charles Warner: Being in St Peter's Square for the announcement of the new Pope was incredible!
Seminarian Charles Warner shared the note below from Rome, where he is studying theology:
"Being in St Peter's Square for the announcement of the new Pope was incredible!
Cheers erupted as soon as the white smoke appeared. People were joyful, happy, curious, relieved, but most of all everyone there was united in the historic moment of the Church awaiting it's new spiritual head, like a child waiting for their father to return home.
The energy of the crowd remained high for the next hour in anticipation for the reveal.
As the announcement started, the crowd quieted and struggled to restrain cheers knowing what was about to be said: habemus papam!
Then the crowd quieted again for full attention on the name. Upon hearing Prevost there was both excitement and shock. I couldn't believe myself I recognized the name. An American! Then Cardinal Prevost just celebrated Thanksgiving with us at the PNAC last year. I remember him having a calm, gentle and kind presence about himself.
Then came the other name, Leone! The eruption of the crowd of over 50,000 people reached its peak at that moment. Leone, Leo XIV, our new Pope. The Church is comforted and so are we."
