On June 27, 2022, Robert DeLand submitted a petition to the Holy Father for permission to permanently leave the priesthood and return to the lay state. In any canonical process, the priest can request dispensation. The Diocese encouraged Robert DeLand to do so.
On September 7, 2022, Pope Francis granted dispensation from the clerical state, although it took some time for the documents to reach the Diocese.
Robert DeLand’s information has been updated on the diocesan website here. He was removed from ministry back in 2018.
The Diocese of Saginaw no longer has any canonical authority over Robert DeLand since he has returned to the lay state.
